‘Positive behaviour support’, you may have heard the term flying around for a little while now as its popularity within the health and social care sector continues to rise, and here at Time 4 U Limited we are very big fans. As a core component of the Department of Health’s policy document ‘Positive and Proactive Care 2014’, this form of person centred support promotes dignity, human rights and respect and is aimed at providing a long term support for all those involved. Positive behaviour support or PBS as it is often known, is aimed at helping those expressing one or more behaviours that are seen as ‘challenging’ in some way. It is this element of person centred support that we are particularly interested in. Instead of applying the rules of a more rigid approach to care, PBS puts the individual first every time, celebrating humanistic differences and using them to inform care plans. The approach recognises that there is more than one way to accurately understand how or why a person behaves the way they do, nor is there any one hard and fast method to alleviating the outcomes of such behaviours.

As the name might suggest, this behavioural approach to support allows the care team to essentially gain a stronger and more informed understanding of why an individuals displaying signs of challenging behaviour are doing what they are doing. From there, it can become easier to develop are far more effective way of approaching these challenging behaviours and help the individual to reduce the impact of such behaviours in the future. A Little More on Positive Behaviour Support
Positive behavioural support uses a technique known as ‘applied behaviour analysis’, if you’re a little new to this concept, it’s essentially used to generate an in-depth understanding of the individual in order to deliver a very effective type of person-centred support.
Applied behaviour analysis looks a little closer at the individual, their family and carers as well as any other support staff gain a better understanding of why a particular set of challenging behaviour traits are displayed. In some cases there may well be some underlying mental or physical health needs that have not been addressed as well as they maybe could have been. In other cases it might be that there are particular sensory or environmental triggers that are causing a challenging behaviour to erupt. After some rather close attention in as natural a setting as possible, the team can then draw up a fully comprehensive positive behaviour support plan to ensure every individual receives the best possible support for them.
What does a positive behavioural support plan look like? Well, a good plan will identify anything that could be causing upset and suggest particular responses or techniques that could be used to help ease discomfort for the individual. With a good positive behavioural support plan in place, the individual should soon be in a much better place to start experiencing more positive behavioural traits, which after all is the main purpose of PBS. The beauty of this type of guidance is that it is also aimed at providing support for others such as family members or carers on how best to cope, reactively, with any unexpected bouts of disruptive behaviour.
